Why We Need Both Parties-US Politics in Bizarro World

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Our nations brand of government is like the comic book “Bizarro World”.
What is supposed to be is so skewered it’s hard to remember what we actually started with.
A two party system with checks and balances, a Supreme Court to interpret law without political influence, pure-to protect citizens’ rights and an administration to act from the will of the people-provided by elected officials representing citizens of the United States.
In Bizarro World there are no representatives for the citizens. In fact, no representation of the little people exists.
Elections are paid for by multinational corporations and they are represented. Multinational corporations hire people they call lobbyists to tell those they elected what they want. Those hired pretend to represent citizens while “voting” as instructed. In return, they leave the job eventually to work for the corporations or with large amounts of money.
Citizens blame the rape of their coffers on the administration. Each administration promises to change this process of big business running government but once in, are voted out because the dirt is so deep it resembles quicksand.
In fact the only administrations voted in more than once are those that represent the big businesses.
What isn’t in the Bizarro World story is how it ends.
While Big Business and Corrupt government can steal from the people who earnestly work and pay taxes, there comes a saturation point. We are close to it.
In our ideal government, the alarms would have gone off years ago and the corruption would have been swept away.

In Bizarro World, corruption wins the day and the little people are swept away.

Immersed in Time

this hour, this minute sometimes this second
time, I stand alone immersed in it,
time has control,
I do not.
whatever the moment pushed forward, resistant poof-
carried me.
My voice lost in the moving minutes,
yesterdays words,
tomorrows
now.
Words that flail, falling words,
coursing through my brain,
pushing outward,
to the spans of  time.
Only my echo is heard
pushed away
this second,
this minute,
now.

The Day My Daughter Almost Died

The Day My Daughter Almost Died

It isn’t as if she was just a little girl that needed our protection so much. It is the question I ask myself-How old are kids supposed to be when they take responsibility and adults take none?
My daughter was 16 when she was playing cards with her dad’s girlfriend and sister one night. They fed her alcohol all night long. Enough to create a dangerous level of alcohol in her system-she stopped breathing and went by ambulance to the Emergency room with a blood alcohol level of  250.
The ensuing fallout between her dad, his girlfriend and myself went something like this-
(Since he did not go to the emergency room with us, stayed at his front door in his bathrobe watching me help her out the door)-since no one woke when she screamed and she called me at 330 in the morning-
his girlfriend denied she ever gave drinks to my 16 year old daughter. Claimed she must have had them after they all passed out.
The police came and asked me if I wanted them to investigate-and I downplayed it-because I did not want to get her father (who is well known in the community) in trouble.

Her father immediately blamed her, eventually blaming me-accusing me of poisoning her mind against him.
I knew the trashing of me might happen, but after having known him for twenty years, and considering him my best friend, I hoped with some time he might think about the events and start questioning the events, rather than blaming her.
He and his girlfriend responded by claiming they would keep alcohol locked up around her-because of course she drank without their knowledge.
This response brought only disgust and disappointment from our daughter.
All the claims of love by him or my running interference with her, didn’t budge her off the fact he never even asked her about the events of that night, believes his girlfriends story and now blames me.
I grieve for my friend (or what I thought was a friendship) and I am sad that they do not speak.
If his girlfriend told him the truth there might be a chance for their relationship, I would gladly stay out of the picture for the remainder of our lives, if it made a difference for my daughter and her dad.
It saddens me that he would think I would trash him to his daughter. Although I have raised her alone, I have always supported their relationship, making the effort to keep the communication lines open.
Now that I am aware of his feelings about me after all these years, I wonder, did he ever really see me as his friend?
Sometimes I think women(me) paint pictures in their heads of things that maybe really don’t exist.
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew, when I took a stand on this situation, and told him I felt it was dangerous and his girlfriend could not be trusted with our daughter, that would be the end of any communication we had.
It is up to my daughter now, two months later and now seventeern.
She wants nothing to do with him.
She feels betrayed. She is hurt that he would disparage me -after years of seeing us get along.
Or perhaps, maybe she and I both thought that but it wan’t true?
She is alive, and I am thankful. I love my daughter. Her relationship with her dad is up to her, not me.
No more running interference. I would call him and give him a heads up about how she was feeling, and try to do the same for him during the rough patches. I see that was a mistake.
Now that it is up to her-she doesn’t want to talk to him.
Perhaps time will heal this for them.
For me, I can’t seem to get the picture out of my head of her face, cold, blue and white, and unmoving, not breathing, in my arms, in the back of the car at 3:30 in the morning.
I am so thankful she is ok, as I write this, I realize, nothing else is as important.

Huffington Post Jumps the Shark

“Huffington Post-Breaking News” has become a joke.

The headline? “Ariana -Why Joe Biden should resign -What the headline should read is, “Ariana, the new Rush Limbaugh-taking herself too seriously, now believing her own hype….
Huffington Post has become a parody of news.

The Glee in Taking down the government-Fox News

What is it about relishing taking down our government? Why is it okay?
“Fox News” can call itself whatever it wants-millions of us ignore it-yet they prey upon ignorant, angry or racist citizens by lying, twisting or outright challenging our current presidential administration.
What people don’t get is they are in it for the dollar.
Your dollar.
The one Bush stole from you and gave to his rich buddies-including Rupert Murdoch(the Australian?)
While the Obama Administration tries to pick up the pieces of the biggest mess in the history of our nation, Fox News, with great fanfare and relish, spends 24/7 lying, ambushing, twisting and hammering.
Ah, Bring back the Bush administration, who received white glove treatment from Fox news, which led us to this disastrous war we can’t seem to stop, the climbing unemployment of our citizens, New Orleans, Wall Street.

What is with this craziness in the United States?
Why not just hand over what little  the citizens have left to Fox News, the oil companies, Citibank, and other corporations taking your jobs and money offshore?
The United States of Fox News -taking down the US government one lie at a time-and taking your money with it. Fools

Another “Opt Out” Story We get what we pay for-no more-no less-the end

I bought twelve months of XM Satellite radio.
I paid for it with my credit card.
No contract.
Just paid for one year.
I get a collection bill in the mail for 26 dollars.
According to XM they are authorized to continue my service for one month beyond what I pay for and bill me for it.
Is this for real?
Since when do you get to authorize your own service to me when I paid for 12 months?
Suck it up, XM.
Take me to court..
I am sick of companies screwing us by “fine printing”.
There needs to be a new law protecting consumers.
Consumers pay money for a certain service and a certain amount, period.
If businesses decide to not cancel after that  agreed upon amount has ended they need to eat it.
We get what we pay for -no more-no less-the end.

Crazy, Irrational Americans…

When Irrationality Drives Our Health Care Decisions..

What is it about affordable health care for all that makes normal people act irrationally?
I’m stumped.
Real facts, real figures, real experiences don’t cut it with America.

I have worked in health care a good chunk of my life. I am old enough to remember the transition from treating need to treating based on ability to pay.
Twenty years ago the phrase, “Your insurance doesn’t cover that” would have been against the Hippocratic Oath.
Now Doctors hide behind HMO’s fearing the dwindling of income, mute.

Michael Moore wants to throw in the towel. Truth is not a motivator for outrage and change.
I don’t understand and I am to the point where I don’t want to anymore.

My country is full of crazy people where the number one TV station is Fox News, and they believe Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. They buy books written by crazy authors who tell them the rich need to be protected and for some reason they believe it.
They go to “Tea Parties” protecting the rich from tax increases.
They refuse to allow the President of the United States to speak with their children.
They believe the crazy media stories about dictatorships and socialism.
They begin to write about harming our President.

Insanity. Crazy, bizarre, unpredictable insanity.

Give this country psychotic meds.
When eighty year olds smugly tell 50 year olds they don’t deserve the same Medicare benefits-”quit smoking and drinking”

I can’t think about it anymore.
Crazy people will run this country. Crazy people own it now.
The day I have a fistful of dollars in my pocket, my visa, passport and citizenship will be left at the doorstep of the United States.
Don’t bother with the insults, I’ve heard them all. Insults are a national past time.
The United States of America is one mean, ugly country today.

Any “socialist” countries out there need teachers?

Any “socialist” countries out there need teachers?

The citizens in my country, the United States, do not believe all citizens deserve access to free health care.

The citizens in my country no longer believe we should have a safety net for our most vulnerable citizens.
Is there a country in this world who will accept me? I have two Masters Degrees and a BA in Social Work.
I want to live in a country which believes we are all created equal.

Las Vegas Review Journal-playing those dirty politics again.l

LVRJ Needs TO GO OUT OF BUSINESS

Harry Reid made the NY Times today. The Las Vegas Review Journal claims he told their advertising executive he hopes they go out of business.

That rag needs to go out of business. The LVRJ ’s total dedication to the rabble rousing crazies, the likes of Sarah Palin’s teabagger, birthers is just plain scary.
Las Vegas has become one isck, crazy town. I make a sport of printing the vicious, loony comments, but this town isn’t “just” corrupt-it thrives on corruption. From the police living in half a million dollar homes to the county commissioners just getting out of prison, it is one scary place.
LVRJ loves stirrin’ up the crazies.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Harry Reid’s comments have been taken out of context.
If they haven’t-as the Las Vegas Review Journal would say, “Quitewhinin-if you don’t like the criticism-just leave the state.”
SHERMAN FREDERICK: Enough is enough, Harry

Stop the childish bullying

This newspaper traces its roots to before Las Vegas wasLas Vegas.

We’ve seen cattle ranches give way to railroads. We chronicled the construction of Hoover Dam. We reported on the first day of legalized gambling. The first hospital. The first school. The first church. We survived the mob, Howard Hughes, the Great Depression, several recessions, two world wars, dozens of news competitors and any number of two-bit politicians who couldn’t stand scrutiny, much less criticism.

We’re still here doing what we do for the people of LasVegas and Nevada. So, let me assure you, if we weathered all of that, we can damn sure outlast the bully threats of Sen. Harry Reid.

On Wednesday, before he addressed a Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Reid joined the chamber’s board members for a meet-’n'-greet and a photo. One of the last in line was the Review-Journal’s director of advertising, Bob Brown, a hard-working Nevadan who toils every day on behalf of advertisers. He has nothing to do with news coverage or the opinion pages of the Review-Journal.

Yet, as Bob shook hands with our senior U.S. senator in what should have been nothing but a gracious business setting, Reid said: “I hope you go out of business.”

Later, in his public speech, Reid said he wanted to let everyone know that he wants the Review-Journal to continue selling advertising because the Las Vegas Sun is delivered inside the Review-Journal.

Such behavior cannot go unchallenged.

You could call Reid’s remark ugly and be right. It certainly was boorish. Asinine? That goes without saying.

But to fully capture the magnitude of Reid’s remark (and to stop him from doing the same thing to others) it must be called what it was — a full-on threat perpetrated by a bully who has forgotten that he was elected to office to protect Nevadans, not sound like he’s shaking them down.

No citizen should expect this kind of behavior from a U.S. senator. It is certainly not becoming of a man who is the majority leader in the U.S. Senate. And it absolutely is not what anyone would expect from a man who now asks Nevadans to send him back to the Senate for a fifth term.

If he thinks he can push the state’s largest newspaper around by exacting some kind of economic punishment in retaliation for not seeing eye to eye with him on matters of politics, I can only imagine how he pressures businesses and individuals who don’t have the wherewithal of the Review-Journal.

For the sake of all who live and work in Nevada, we can’t let this bully behavior pass without calling out Sen. Reid. If he’ll try it with the Review-Journal, you can bet that he’s tried it with others. So today, we serve notice on Sen. Reid that this creepy tactic will not be tolerated.

We won’t allow you to bully us. And if you try it with anyone else, count on going through us first.

That’s a promise, not a threat.

And it’s a promise to our readers, not to you, Sen. Reid.

Sherman Frederick (sfrederick@

Over 3,000 people replied to Sherm’s “opinion”. How is that for ratings? What is really crazy? They will probably succeed in voting Harry Reid out-only to vanish into nothingness-once again. Honestly, just put Yucca Mountain back on track. Nevada can’t get any worse.

Dear Mr. Frederick,

Senator Reid had every right to punch Bob Brown in the gut and then drive his knee into Mr. Brown’s nose as he doubled over. Unfortunately, Senator Reid is far too gracious to do what was deserved. I too hope your rag goes out of business. Who cares what your paper has reported in the past or how long the paper has been around. Wow, I am in awe–your paper actually reported the first day of gambling in Nevada. Amazing!. Recounting your paper’s long history reminds me of a senile grandfather retelling the same story over and over to grandchildren who could hardly care less. Fortunately, your paper will indeed go out of business–probably sooner than you expect. Even the best papers will continue to struggle in theinternet era. A second class paper run by thin-skinned tools like you have no chance at all. So, Mr. Frederick, take your feigned shock and choke on it. No one cares about your opinion, your paper or your indignation. I am sure Bob Brown does indeed toil everyday because he has the unfortunate job of pitching something no one wants to buy. But, if Mr. Brown insists on making his living selling rubbish, he should not be surprised if someone rubs it in his face from time to time. So, not only do I support Mr. Reid’s wish to see your paper fail–on a personal note–I hope that your remaining days are spent coming to the gradual realization that you life was spent on something that hardly mattered. The war is over. You and your ilk lost. Good day Mr. Frederick.

Dr. D wrote on August 30, 2009 02:41 PM:Oh America, you are ever so quickly being conquered by the tyranny of the liberal/Democratic hordes. The Titanic is slowly sinking and it those who have elected the anti-American, anti-Christian tyrants to elected? public? office.
Do we as a people not see that the liberal agenda and its minions are rapidly taking our rights, our freedoms, our heritage, our history away and replacing it with asinine nonsense. Reid is among many who are telling us to our faces how stupid we are and how stupid we will be for: electing these liberals and then supporting them by NOT throwing them out of office as the traitors to America that are.
In closing, we have a long way to go…but the pain to endure as America falls will not be easy, especially for those who know the TRUTH and want it.

Paranoia and suspicion drive Americans’ madness-Healthcare

Paranoia and suspicion drive Americans madness

“Keep your hands off our health care”-people scream.

What health care coverage?
14.5 million people are unemployed in this country.
In July, people unemployed for more than 27 weeks rose to 5 million. It increased another 584,00-meaning 1 in three people unemployed have been for longer than six months.
I was speaking with a friend about the health care issue this weekend. Her take? Like many-we don’t need any death squads like England!
Her son is disabled and on medicaid.
I asked her if he had ever been denied treatment?
“No”, she said-but that is medicaid.”
“I’m not insured”, I told her. I am 55 and working for a government program-hired through a temp agency. It is a government program to help people find jobs. I do not get paid for holidays or
receive health insurance.
For the first time in my life, over 30 years of employment in the US, paying for health care, I don’t have it.
People with disabilities and those over the age of sixty five have government health insurance. These are considered, “entitlement programs” .
We take care of these two populations on a national level.
Oh! We also have “socialized health care” for veterans.
What is this madness?
The health care industry has gouged us for years. We hear nightmarish stories about people dying. Death squads already exist. Ask anyone with an HMO. Many people trying to appeal decisions by health care insurers die before they get a chance to receive treatment.
Why is everyone screaming about national health care coverage?
Our country descends into madness.
Ignorance is our enemy. The insurance companies must be gleefully watching the nations citizens descend into Dante’s inferno of fear, suspicion and paranoia-shaking heads in amazement!
How can this be so easy?. they ask.
“It is a dream come true!”
We had no idea-the mental instability of the American people “
The rich white man’s last hurrah
